Assessment

Justice and social service systems are designed to help, yet agencies often face challenges in resources, time, and staff capacity. NCCD translates research into practice with several services and systems to help maximize agency resources and enable better service to clients. These tools have been developed to meet the assessment, planning, and reporting needs of criminal justice, juvenile justice, child welfare, and adult protective service agencies both at state and local levels. At the center of many NCCD systems is a customized risk assessment that helps agencies identify clients most in need of assistance, which directs resources to where they can have the greatest impact in preventing negative outcomes.

JAIS™ (Juvenile Assessment and Intervention System)

JAIS is a gender-responsive, evidence-based approach to the supervision of youth that offers staff an effective, easy-to-use interface to assess the gender-specific risks and needs of youth. JAIS provides specific supervision strategies based on a youth’s underlying motivation for illegal behavior. For administrators and managers, JAIS provides the ability to easily monitor agency data and needs through data reports that summarize the risk and needs profiles of youth served as well as helping to identify staff training or resource needs.

CAIS™ (Correctional Assessment and Intervention System)

CAIS is a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to the supervision of adult offenders. Just as JAIS does for youth, CAIS helps staff identify the motivation for criminal behavior and lays out specific supervision strategies to guide the agency in improving safety and better outcomes. CAIS can help agency administrators maximize the limited resources of staff time and access to treatment programs to most effectively work with justice-involved clients.

Structured Decision Making® (SDM) System

The SDM system pairs actuarial assessments with structured tools and engagement strategies to create a comprehensive practice model for service delivery. SDM systems help workers make consistent, reliable, and equitable decisions, along with enabling agency administrators to track outcomes and measure compliance. NCCD’s Children’s Research Center has developed SDM systems for child welfare, adult protective services, substitute care providers, and welfare-to-work.

Customized Risk and Needs Assessment

NCCD can also work with you to construct valid and reliable risk and needs assessments for use with your agency’s populations.
